A New Name Can Spark Incredible Changes

If your business name isn’t pulling its weight, there’s no question that it’s holding you back. A strong, distinctive name amplifies your brand’s ROI—and marks the difference between being unforgettable and unnoticed.

Over the past 30 years, our team has worked with thousands of home service brands. We don’t rename every brand we work with—only when it’s truly in your best interest and you can see the value in making the change. We always provide honest advice about the benefits of choosing a new name, even when it may feel difficult.

Not all names are created equal. In fact, many fall into overused categories that make companies feel generic rather than memorable. Here are some of the naming traps that land on the ‘blanded’ side of the spectrum:

  • Names Based on Initials or Last Names. Initials or last names might be personal and meaningful to you, but they don’t mean anything to your customers. Names like these don’t convey any personality or purpose. They’re forgettable, sometimes tricky to spell and can make you blend in with lower-quality competitors using the same generic approach.
  • Industry-Focused or Technical Names. A hyper-specific name can trap you in one industry and make future service expansion more difficult. But go too broad—using vague terms like “home services” or “mechanical”—and you risk confusing the average homeowner. Generic, industry-based names simply don’t do enough work to build trust or brand equity.
  • Region-Specific Names. KickCharge is based in Washington, New Jersey—but we would never consider calling ourselves “North Central NJ Creative.” A region-specific name won’t make you the “local choice” that you may think it will. These names only box you into one service area and aren’t unique, ownable or sustainable. Consider your competition: how many other companies are taking this exact same approach with their own businesses?
  • Vague or Bland Names. A name that doesn’t say anything does just that. These brands are easy to overlook, tough to remember and don’t make a case for why someone should choose them. They are also difficult to trademark, raising the risk for legal trouble and putting you at a serious disadvantage if you hope to expand.

The good news? You’re never stuck with the wrong name. We’ve rounded up 10 of our most radical naming transformations to show how struggling brands turned things around—and how the right name made all the difference.

Don’t Let a Poor Name Hold You Back

Renaming your company isn’t just a creative decision—it’s a strategic one. The right name, supported by your entire brand, creates connection and builds trust before you ever shake a hand or step through a front door. It sets the tone for how customers perceive your company, your values and the quality of work they can expect.
